Free game giveaways: what you need to know
How giveaways actually work
Epic drops a new free game most Thursdays and leaves it up for seven days. Claim it and it is yours. Not a rental, not a trial, not a thing that evaporates when a subscription lapses. It sits in your library next to the games you paid for.
You do not have to download it. Hitting claim is the whole job and it takes about four seconds. People miss games because they were asleep when the timer ran out, not because installing was hard.
Who gives away what
Epic is the only store running anything like a schedule. GOG, Ubisoft and Prime Gaming go when they feel like it. Prime Gaming's catch is that you need an active Prime subscription, so it is free the way Netflix is free.
Steam almost never gives away full games. It is sitting on the biggest demo library on the internet instead, which is a different page.
What is not on this page
Free weekends are not giveaways. You get access until the promo ends and then you get nothing. Same with trials. Anything here that is temporary access rather than permanent ownership says so on the row.
Demos, free-to-play and DLC get their own pages. Lumping them together is how somebody claims a cosmetic pack for a game they do not own and wonders why it will not launch.
